Mixed Media

My mixed media pieces are created using just about anything that is within reach. I use Acrylic paint as my paint of choice sometimes adding in watercolor. I add material like tissue paper, modeling paste, junk mail, magazine cut outs, cardstock, other paper bits and napkins, just to list a few, to create texture, form and more color. Graphite pencils, ink, and china markers are used to create “fake” writing, various shapes and lines and often for shading. Stamps come into play for some of the detail. Papers created on the gel plate are torn, punched or cut then directly attached to the piece using gel medium or Aleene’s Tacky Glue.  My substrates for larger pieces are cradled board, canvas or 140-pound watercolor paper. Artist Trading Card bases are often cut from cardboard food product containers using Gesso to cover the sanded print side before adding the art design. Product packaging not only makes a great ATC base but in using it, I get to take another step toward recycling.

Visitors to my studio often remark on how perfect my circles are. I must admit to them I use jar and bottle caps of various sizes loaded up with paint or ink to stamp those perfect circles. I love circles and you can usually spot them in my art.

Many of the original pieces are available for sale.

WHO’S OUT THERE

If you look into the larger circle, you can see something or someone is lurking out there…but who?

SEARCH LIGHTS

Someone has escaped. Are they dangerous? Is that a road block?

SPRING TIME

Flowers are blooming everywhere. Gentle breezes blow across the crystal blue sky as mother Earth awakens.

DUCK POND

They would be out there, but they are smarter than the hunters hiding in that makeshift blind.

THE OLD DOCK

We used to dive off that dock many years ago. My brother and 3 of his friends built it out of wood they saved from fence repairs. It’s fenced off now. Sold to a gazillionaire who will soon build and make the beach private.

I’M NOT LOST

Driving around town always caused a panic attack. Always afraid of getting lost. Once upon a time there were tiny hand drawn maps strewn about the van floor. A friend drew out every place I had to be. Now…Technology has me following a sweet voice as she tells me every turn, better routes and gets me there safely every time.

BEACH BLANKETS

Ocean waves crashing on the beach. Dune buggies making tracks in the sand. Me on the blanket, watching, listening and breathing in the salty air. Oh, how I miss the ocean.

GIRAFFE

Gel plate papers form his patches. His expression lets you know “You got this!”
